Il était une fois. Comme dans tous les grands romans, c¹est-à-dire qui sollicitent notre part d¹enfance, cela commence par : « Il y avait autrefois dans la salle à manger des grands-parents, un sabre de modèle inconnu, que je n¹ai jamais manié, jamais soupesé, pas même caressé. » Le revoilà, Samuel Vidouble, le narrateur, coincé dans une maison, poussiéreuse mais encore hantée par les fantômes d¹une famille provinciale, calviniste, « sans histoires, sans qualités, sans titres de gloire », dans « un cul-de-sac de la France et de l¹Europe », au bout d¹une ligne de train improbable et nocturne, le revoilà, ce Samuel Vidouble, professeur d¹histoire désabusé, et amateur de cartes de géographie, qui décide d¹enquêter sur ce souvenir d¹enfance, guidé par tante Esther, libraire à la retraite : « Où était-il passé ce sabre ? Et si je l¹avais rêvé ? »Ce n¹est pas tant le sabre à la lame courbée, fêlée, couleur de Sienne, que les époques qu¹il a pu traverser, les lignées d¹hommes, de guerres, de morts, qui impressionnaient autrefois le jeune Samuel, lui qui appartient à la dernière génération ayant connu celles qui firent la guerre. Et puis à quel ancêtre revenait-il, ce sabre ? Qui était l¹héroi[u0308]que, ou au contraire, l¹imposteur sans foi ni loi : VVRL, Victor Vidouble Rex Livorum ? Victor Vidouble roi des Lives, qui aurait jadis régné sur un archipel de la Baltique ? Un descendant d¹huguenot confiné dans son pays de marais, d¹étangs et de tourbières ? Un nobliau du XVIIIe siècle, amoureux des cartes de géographie, lui aussi, et qui mise sur elle pour l¹arracher à sa province reculée ? Le baron Victor Vidouble de Saint-Pesant, mythe familial ou légende du grand dehors que les oncles-vétérans réinventent à tour de rôle, à la veillée ? Vaut-il mieux se vouer au réel, souvent décevant, que suivre l¹aile de l¹imaginaire, avec ses histoires d¹îles perdues ou inventées ? à moins qu¹une carte au trésor familiale nous permette de situer le lieu et l¹époque d¹où viendrait le fameux sabre ? Dans la lignée des autres livres d¹Emmanuel Ruben, qui ont l¹imaginaire et l¹ailleurs au cœur de leur force, mais d¹une puissance romanesque remarquable, d¹une invention géographique drolatique, Sabre est le livre de la maturité. Un vrai roman picaresque qui tient des Aventures du Baron de MÉunchhausen autant que du Baron perché d¹Italo Calvino. C¹est un jeu de pistes vertigineux qui nous fait remonter le fil du temps jusqu¹aux guerres napoléoniennes, et nous invite à un voyage baroque à la poursuite de chimères qui disent notre vérité.
