Au cours d’une mission, le détective Nishi, laisse tomber son ami et partenaire Horibe pour se rendre au chevet de sa femme. A l’hôpital, on lui apprend qu’elle est condamnée. Nishi reçoit un deuxième choc quand un officier de police l’informe qu’une fusillade a éclaté et qu’Horibe a été blessé par balle. Des semaines plus tard, Nishi rend visite à Horibe, cloué dans un fauteuil roulant. Incapable de supporter cette situation, la femme d’Horibe l’a quitté, emmenant leur petite fille avec elle. Maintenant qu’il vit seul au bord de la mer, Horibe aimerait bien se remettre à la peinture, mais il n’a pas les moyens d’acheter le matériel nécessaire. Nishi, obsédé par les événements traumatisants qui ont brisé la vie de ceux qui l’entourent, a quitté la police.
Rongé par la culpabilité, il emprunte de l’argent à un yakuza afin d’acheter du matériel de peinture à Horibe et venir en aide à la veuve d’un de ses amis tué au cours de la fusillade. Nishi va chercher son épouse à l’hôpital afin qu’elle passe auprès de lui les derniers jours qui lui restent à vivre.
