Berlin, immédiate après-guerre. La famille Köhler tente de survivre tant bien que mal, malgré les privations. Le père, malade, ne peut travailler. La fille sort dans les bars chaque soir. Le fils aîné, ancien de la Wehrlacht, se cache de peur d'être emprisonné. Le plus jeune fils, Edmund, 12 ans, parcourt la ville, dans l'espoir d'aider sa famille, notamment en ramenant de la nourriture.
