"Les Premiers Jours du Monde touchent à peine à leur fin quand Fe[u0308]anor, le plus doué des elfes, crée les trois Silmarils. Ces bijoux renferment la précieuse Lumière des Deux Arbres de Valinor. Morgoth, le premier Seigneur des Ténèbres, qui habite la Terre du Milieu, décide alors de dérober les Silmarils pour les sertir sur sa couronne avant de se réfugier dans la forteresse d¹Angband. Suite à ce vol, les elfes affrontent le Seigneur des Ténèbres afin de récupérer les joyaux. Longtemps, longtemps après, lors de la Guerre de l¹Anneau, Elrond et Galadriel parleraient encore de cette guerre originelle. Composé de récits allant des Jours Anciens de la Terre du Milieu jusqu¹à la fin de la Guerre de l¹Anneau, en passant par le Second âge et la montée en puissance de Sauron, Le Silmarillion est au cœur de l¹univers imaginé par J.R.R. Tolkien. Les contes y sont accompagnés de plusieurs œuvres plus courtes. L¹Ainulindale[u0308] est un mythe de la Création tandis que la Valaquenta décrit la nature et les pouvoirs des dieux. L¹Akallabêth raconte la destruction du royaume insulaire de Numenor à la fin du Second âge et Les Anneaux du Pouvoir relatent les grands événements de la fin du Troisième âge que l¹on retrouve dans Le Seigneur des Anneaux. J.R.R. Tolkien n¹a pas pu publier Le Silmarillion de son vivant, car il a évolué avec lui. Il a donc laissé à son fils Christopher le soin de faire paraître cet ouvrage à partir de nombreux manuscrits et de rendre publiable sa grande vision, terminant ainsi l¹œuvre littéraire de toute une vie."
