Liliom est un mauvais garçon qui travaille comme bonimenteur sur un champ de foire, pour le compte de Mme Muskrat. Julie, une jeune fille pure et naïve, se laisse séduire par ce voyou brutal et sans scrupules. Cependant, lorsqu'il apprend que son amie est enceinte de ses œuvres, Liliom accepte de participer à un cambriolage afin de se procurer l'argent nécessaire à fonder un foyer et à refaire sa vie ailleurs. Malheureusement, le casse tourne mal... Liliom est un des films les plus étonnants de Fritz Lang, le seul qu'il ait réalisé pendant son éxil à Paris, aprés son départ précipité de l'Allemagne Nazie en 1933.
